Safe Surfing

February brings a great opportunity to explore safe web browsing practices. With Safer Internet Day on February 11th, it’s the perfect time to revisit how we can all protect ourselves and our organizations online.

Safe browsing habits are essential in a world where phishing scams, malicious websites and unsecured networks pose daily threats. In this month’s newsletter, we’ll cover what you need to know about safe web browsing.

Safe browsing habits are essential

Think before you click

Cybercriminals often use enticing ads, pop-ups or email links to lure you into unsafe websites. If something seems too good to be true, like an offer for a free gift card, pause before clicking. And if something seems so urgent that you absolutely have to do it, like a bright red warning about a sudden virus infection, it could be a trap!

Always hover over links to see their destination, especially in an email. You can also go directly to a website by typing in the address right into the browser. This will ensure that you get to the correct destination safely.

A Look for the lock

Before you enter sensitive information such as passwords, credit card details or personal data, make sure the website uses a secure connection. Look for the padlock icon next to the URL and ensure the web address starts with https://. This means that your connection to the site is encrypted, making it harder for attackers to intercept your data.

Clear cookies and cache

Your browser stores temporary files, cookies and other data from websites to improve performance, but these can also be used to track your activity or compromise your privacy if left unchecked. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies periodically to enhance privacy and ensure that you’re viewing the most up-to-date versions of web pages.

Beware of public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks at coffee shops, airports or hotels might be convenient, but they’re often unsecured, making it easy for hackers to eavesdrop on your activity. If you need to connect through public Wi-Fi, avoid logging into sensitive accounts or entering personal information. A virtual private network (VPN) can add a layer of encryption to keep your data safe.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day (SID) is an annual event celebrated globally to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology. In 2025, SID will take place on Tuesday, February 11, with the theme “Together for a better internet.”
